Doughboy Great-uncle Earnest was one of the last casualties of the "War to end all wars." He died October 15, 1918, just weeks before the Armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The story is that he climbed a tree to get a better view of the German trenches and was riddled with bullets.
Private Earnest R. Matney, U.S.A. 29th Division, 116th Infantry, Buried in Radford, Virginia
